With two games left in the NFL season, the Denver Broncos have Russell Wilson on the bench. “I understand all the speculation and everything surrounding a move like this. I can tell you – look, we’re trying desperately to win. Of course, there’s economics and all the other factors in our game today. But No. 1. This The first driving force behind this — and this is the decision I’m making — is to get a spark on offense,” head coach Sean Payton said.
Wilson was benched after the team’s loss to the Patriots last weekend. It was their third loss in four games, a trend that derailed playoff hopes following a five-game winning streak earlier in the season. However, as Payton hinted, there was speculation that his replacement had ulterior motives. If Wilson fails to pass a physical next March, he will receive an additional $37 million in guaranteed money. Having him on the bench increases the likelihood that the Broncos will be able to save some money on the quarterback’s massive contract.

Jaret Stidham replaces Russell Wilson
Jarret Stidham takes Wilson’s place under center. Stidham signed a two-year, $10 million contract with the Denver Nuggets this offseason, but will make his first start this week. “Obviously it was difficult and all of us were like, ‘Man, we didn’t do a good enough job.’ But one of the things we saw when we signed Stidham in the offseason was not only the preseason Film, regular season film…he’s a guy I’m eager to see play,” Payton said.
Stidham was a fourth-round draft pick by New England in 2019 after playing time at Baylor and Auburn. He was traded to Las Vegas in 2022 after playing eight games in three seasons. There, he made the first two starts of his career, replacing Derek Carr in the final two games of the regular season. Despite being 0-2, Stidham impressed the league, especially when he helped the 49ers force overtime in his first start. His first start in Denver came against the Chargers.
