Yo AUS10, how long have you been a Hip Hop artist?
A: I’ve been rapping since I was 14, I might add, I started taking it seriously when I was about 17.
How your city influenced your hip-hop career!
A: First of all, even though I’m a Californian, my influence is all over the world. I would say that the west coast of Los Angeles as a whole has a very unique vibe. When I want to, I can choose to bring the city out of me and you’ll hear it in the music, or I can choose another lyrical expression, either way the core of it comes from someone who grew up in the city. The older boy has a story like many other black boys.
Also, where did your host name come from?
A: My earliest memory of my name is a conversation with one of my sisters who introduced me to the studio environment in my early years and really believed in me and showed up the most.
How are you coping with the nationwide lockdown due to the Covid-19 coronavirus? Has this had any impact on your music career?
A: I’m handling it very well. Before this pandemic, I was, and still am, someone who naturally devoted more time to crafts and work indoors than out and about unless there was a clear reason to get up and move around. While this change has definitely had an impact on me mentally due to the number of recorded deaths and the conditions in which physical interactions occur, as an individual I still take the time to ensure my health is A1 through exercise and diet, and to stay focused The same goes for music.
For your debut album MATTER OF FACT, can you tell us more about the creative process behind it?
A: It’s interesting to me that you call it an album because I look at all my projects as my best work at the time, so I have to be doing something right, but to your question, generally I have a catalog of beats from different producers. Once it’s all over, I’ll take the time to listen to a few, and if the first few are great, I’ll keep listening. Even when producers don’t have the biggest following or catalog hits, I hear them because I remember when I first started out as a rapper, I thought all I needed was to have someone to listen to me . Once I find the right beat, I write the lyrics on the spot and record them after rehearsal. This may sound simple, but for someone like me who needs to take the time to critique every word of my own for the best combination or lyrics, it’s a worthy challenge.
How do you write and produce material? What mood are you usually in when making music?
A: When I hear new instruments and create new music, my mind immediately opens up. These thoughts that I have that end up in song form come from a higher intelligence, a higher source, so I have to be open to it so that I don’t say the same thing that I said in the hour-long song or 2 hours ago. When I consciously sit down and tell myself it’s time to make some new music, I would say my mood is…mindful. I say “mindfulness” now because as I’ve matured and I know where I want to take my music and how I want to be remembered, there’s a certain energy that comes with that.
Did you vote this year?
A: I may have a bigger goal for the future, which is change outside of politics, as a social individual, and one day I can create my own events that give instant gratification and give back to those who need it.

As IndieHipHop.com, we always ask this important question. What is your definition of true “indie hip-hop”?
Let me break it down this way. Hip Hop is a state of mind, my actions are Hip Hop, the way I dress and speak is Hip Hop. This is a cultivated character. To me, independence is someone who takes on the role of self-investment and doesn’t have to do it in anyone’s way but their own way. I don’t know what the term “indie hip-hop” is per se, but as I mentioned, breaking down these separate terms “indie” and “hip-hop” can give you a clearer idea of what you’re looking for when expressing it Together.
