Please tell us how many years you have been making music wavs? For those who aren’t familiar, tell us a little bit about your background in the hip-hop game. Please explain in details.
I’ve been improvising or trying to be involved in music my whole life. But about four years ago I started taking it seriously. It just never really fit the mold of someone who was supposed to improv, and a lot of the kids I knew were into rap music in the apartment I grew up in, which made me feel really ashamed and embarrassed for expressing an interest as a kid. But fuck, I grew up and I was influenced by so much music that not belonging anywhere made me look everywhere for who I was. Like what music is to me. I guess I’m hip-hop at heart, but I don’t think I’m in the hip-hop game. I feel like I’m just in this business making music – and some of the shit I make is rap shit.
How did you come up with your host name wav?
I didn’t really “figure it out.” People just say you’re a “wavy guy,” or that I “always go with the flow.” I think when I think of waves I think of Bruce Lee. And wav is aesthetically more beautiful and eye-catching.
Do you find that most of your fan base is familiar with you from your older projects, or do you feel like in recent years you’ve been discovered more for your musical merits? Please explain in details.
I used to use yvng wav as my government name for a game, but when certain songs were miscategorized on Apple and other important platforms, I couldn’t get them back to me. In fact, I’m also very attracted to this name. But my caps are always screwed up like “Yvng Wav” and I really believe that if my shit is good enough and my supporters are sincere, they will come back once I notify everyone about the switch . So some of it is old and some of it is new. My fan base isn’t as big as id imagined, but it’s definitely growing and there’s been an amazing amount of support from people who aren’t part of it. They inspire me a lot.
What is unique about wav that makes you stand out compared to other artists. Please explain in details.
Like “I FOR REAL,” every song only needs one or two hits. It’s not something I wrote, I just did it on a different beat and called it freestyle. Like a lot of artists say “My songs are freeform/I don’t write” but it’s like record after bar. Most of the time I do the whole thing, or at least the whole chorus, and then the whole verse. Wish I could have made a video or something, but I’m a shy person and the stuff in the booth was too heavy for me because it felt so real to me. I think it’s something that people either love or hate. I think sometimes words are shallow. In my opinion, stacking puns, tripling puns, doing long narratives like prose type songs is something you can teach anyone. Like the craziest lyric I wrote when I was in fourth grade. To me, that shit is superficial. What you can’t teach is how to express feelings in a certain way. Evoke emotional responses in people. Arouse your own emotions. When you improvise a song like I do, there’s no chance of lying or trying to be perfect. It’s just honestly raw stuff and you don’t even have time to think about it it’s like feeling -> sound instead of feeling -> conscious thought -> written document -> rehearsed sound. I have severe ADHD, so maybe I’m just in a daze.
How far do you want to go in the music industry? Would you rather be signed to a major label or remain independent?
I wanted to be the next Bruce Lee, but in a different art form. I feel like I have a lot of valuable opinions, feelings, and experiences – I just don’t have a loud enough voice to be heard at the moment, if you know what I’m saying. I want to do whatever it takes to put my loved ones where I think they deserve and alleviate all the struggles. My mother worked hard to raise us all her life. Typical shit. I guess if I got the right offer from the right brand I would consider signing, but I built a baby empire. We are completely self-sufficient and now we just release and distribute music. I know how to build a quality recording studio. That’s how we initially made money in Los Angeles. I don’t need an audio engineer. I have my own dedication and learn from the best. I don’t need a DJ. Of all the people I trusted, I trusted very few. I don’t want to need anyone.
In the new year of 2021, what can we expect from new wav music? Please refer to your upcoming projects that you feel free to talk about.
I think I’ve put out my first official album, and I’ll definitely be releasing some cool new features in the near future. I will also be doing a lot of visual effects.
How are you making music around the whole Covid 19 situation due to the pandemic?
To be honest, it’s pretty fucked up. Luckily, we have our own high-quality studio, so this doesn’t have much of an impact on my actual music production. But my family was crazy, and my mother was a particularly dangerous person. So I commute to Los Angeles frequently to help her when she needs it. I’m very wary of some hazmat suit type stuff. Streaming life is good for us. I need to improve this though. Because our studio is so high quality, we just mix and master people’s music remotely.
We have to ask, in the face of all this social rhetoric and resistance, protests and riots, and exposed police brutality against minorities, what are your thoughts on this? Not to mention the huge wealth gap between the 1% and the rest of us. We’d love to know your thoughts on the climate we’re in right now?
I think this is a really big and important question that I can’t really answer enough here, and I’ve written quite a bit about it, so I guess I want to wait until I can respond in some way to say what I think before it’s worth it Such a twisted, personal/emotional topic.
Is there any message and/or advice you would like to pass on to all the new hosts coming up today?
Be good at social media, or have a team that works for you. Don’t take shortcuts. Be prepared to fail and keep getting up. Be thick-skinned. Respect others in the industry. From where I am in my career now, I think that’s what I have the right to say.
