southfield, michigan – A music teacher has been charged with sex crimes involving children, and we’re learning the problem has a long history in a school district.
The man currently facing multiple sex crime charges is Lamar Willis.
According to court documents, Lamar Willis faces four counts of second-degree criminal sexual conduct and three counts of accosting a child for an immoral purpose; all offenses occurred in January 2022.
Southfield Public Schools sent a letter to parents and guardians on Dec. 18 saying it began investigating the allegations against Willis as early as March, and Willis resigned in June. Criminal charges were still months away.
SPS explained in the letter that it all started in March 2023 with allegations of inappropriate behavior against Lamar Willis. At that time they launched an internal investigation and immediately suspended Willis. He resigned in June and, as far as the district is aware, has had no contact with students or staff since. The district also mentioned that they are reviewing their policies and protocols to ensure a safe environment for all.
Willis is also working with the Detroit Public Schools Community District; they told us he was recently placed on administrative leave.
“In accordance with district policy, Mr. Willis was placed on administrative leave on December 15 after the Southfield Prosecutor’s Office was alerted of pending criminal charges. He was hired by the district in the fall.” DPSCD spokesperson Chrystal Wilson said in a statement He had no known criminal or misconduct record at the time of his employment.
Local 4 reached out to Willis’ attorney but has not yet heard back.
