Joe Flacco has emerged as the Browns’ playoff push hero as he prepares to take on his former team, the Jets Thursday night football. After Aaron Rodgers was sidelined due to injury, Flacco was waived and Zach Wilson returned to the starting role. As a result, however, Jets fans have come to consistently lament the lengths their team seemed to go to in passing on a franchise-changing quarterback.
The trend began in 1983 when the Jets waived Dan Marino. Decision-makers later said they passed on Marino because the Steelers passed on him. Marino is a hometown hero in Pittsburgh. However, Marino became a division nightmare after being drafted by the Dolphins. Less than a decade later, a last-minute trade fell through, leaving the Jets without the option of selecting Brett Favre. The Jets had the No. 1 pick in the draft in the late ’90s, but that didn’t convince Peyton Manning to give up his senior year at Tennessee. As recently as 2018, the Jets passed on Josh Allen and Lamar Jackson and selected Sam Darnold.

Aaron Rodgers responds to criticism for coming off IR
Meanwhile, Aaron Rodgers, who is expected to be the Jets’ quarterback next season, weighed in after being activated from injured reserve. “I thought I was going to go on IR. I asked to go on IR, but then a conversation happened. ‘Do you want to practice?’ And I’m not talking about it at the expense of someone getting cut. I know how that works – I don’t feel like I need to practice to continue my rehab. I can do some part-time work on the field, but, obviously, I’m being overruled out there. That’s the way it is. It’s an interesting situation,” Rodgers told The Pat McPhee Show this week.
Rodgers was activated on Dec. 20, when his 21-day training window closed. If he remains on IR, he will not be able to practice with the team for the remainder of the season. Despite being eliminated from playoff contention and with no plans to play Rodgers, the Jets moved him to the active roster. This resulted in linebacker Nick Bowden being waived and later signed to the practice squad.
