Aaron Rodgers told critics he was activated on IR to fill a Jets roster spot even though he has no intention of playing this season. “I thought I was going to go on IR. I asked to go on IR, but then a conversation happened. ‘Do you want to practice?’ And I’m not talking about it at the expense of someone getting cut. I know how that works – I don’t feel like I need to practice to continue my rehab. I can do some part-time work on the field, but, obviously, I’m being overruled out there. That’s the way it is. It’s an interesting situation,” Rodgers told The Pat McPhee Show this week.
Rodgers was activated on Dec. 20, when his 21-day training window closed. If he remains on IR, he will not be able to practice with the team for the remainder of the season. Despite being eliminated from playoff contention and with no plans to play Rodgers, the Jets moved him to the active roster. This resulted in linebacker Nick Bowden being waived and later signed to the practice squad.

What’s next for Aaron Rodgers and the Jets?
As mentioned, the Jets are now officially out of playoff contention, which is the first requirement for Rodgers to return. However, with six wins, the Jets are not qualified to compete for the No. 1 pick. As of this writing, the Jets are expected to receive the ninth overall pick, which many experts believe they will use to draft a young receiver.
The biggest question, however, remains the quarterback role. Rodgers is expected to be the QB1 when the 2024 season begins. However, Rodgers, now in his 40s, isn’t New York’s long-term solution after suffering a season-ending injury. Meanwhile, Zach Wilson has consistently shown that he’s not the player the Jets hoped he would be. This question needs to be answered as soon as possible. But the Jets currently have two games to play, facing the Browns and Patriots to end the season.
