AI is rapidly changing many aspects of daily life, including music and entertainment. The technology has been a major push for greater protection within the music industry, as AI companies face multiple lawsuits over alleged copyright infringement.
Legendary music producers Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, the creative geniuses behind many pop and R&B hits, are now speaking out about the challenges artificial intelligence poses to the music industry. Their concerns stem from AI’s potential ability to copy and manipulate artists’ existing works without proper authorization.
“It’s a new day. It’s a new technology. It requires new rules,” Lewis said.
He said artificial intelligence can take a song or a set of compositions and use all the data it has to create a song.
“Like. If all of a sudden someone took a version of Janet[Jackson’s]voice and put it in a song,” Jimmy Jam explained. “If she says, ‘Yeah, that’s fine,’ and she’s involved, that’s different than if someone just accepts it…and there’s really no oversight right now.”
U.S. Senators Chris Coons and Marsha Blackburn are seeking to address these issues by drafting a bipartisan “No Counterfeit Act.” The proposed legislation aims to protect artists’ sonic and visual likenesses, holding individuals, companies and platforms accountable for copying performances without permission.
“You’ve got to put some penalties on the books so we can move forward productively,” Blackburn said.
“The Authentic Act will take lessons from many existing state laws … and turn them into national standards,” Coons said.
This is in response to unauthorized incidents AI-generated song by Drake and The Weekndwhich garnered millions of views before being deleted.
Artificial intelligence can also play a positive role in the music industry. This is the key to reviving the Beatles song, “occasionally,” The song was released in 2023 after artificial intelligence software was used to revamp a demo by the late John Lennon and was endorsed by the surviving Beatles.
“We just want to make sure it’s done in a fair way,” Jimmy Jam said.
