As much as we like interviews to go as planned, they are arguably more enjoyable when they are clearly awkward for some reason.For example, check out this short and sweet clip from Nine Inch Nails creator Trent Reznor on MTV 120 minutes Back to 1989, Because it’s very strange.
Apparently, the interview took place during one of the show’s Christmas episodes, with Reznor showing up to promote “Down in It,” the latest single from Nine Inch Nails’ debut record beautiful hate machine. Reznor and host Dave Kendall decorated a Christmas tree as experimental band The Ordinaries played in the background.
Kendall said, “Joke of the decade: How does Trent Reznor’s mom hang his Christmas stockings? Answer? With nine-inch nails!” Understandably, both men cringed at the bad pun and Fake laugh.
Next, Kendall thanked Reznor for “coming to this beautiful (and) Snowing Christmas morning,” and then paused to wait for Reznor’s response. Instead of cooperating, however, Reznor laughed to himself again—with his hands in his coat pockets—looking annoyed.
Kendall then asked him if he had “any plans to do another single (after “Down in It”), to which Reznor responded: “Actually, we’re working on a new single (“Down in It”). Head Like a Hole”), where (beautiful hate machine Producer) Flood, we’re about to do that. ” His hair flip, shoulders shrug, and smirk showed that he was not interested in the progress of their conversation.
To be fair, Kendall seemed equally aloof (and ignorant), and the two continued to appear distant and uncomfortable as they discussed NIN’s single, video, and accompanying album tour plans. Meanwhile, the melancholy chamber music of the Ordinary People Orchestra adds to the unease.
