According to data from Luminate, U.S. vinyl record sales surged in the week ended December 21, with 2.054 million units sold. It was the best week for vinyl record sales in 2023 and the third-biggest in the modern era since Luminate began tracking sales electronically in 1991.
The only larger two-week averages since 1991 occurred in the previous two years. The second largest frame occurred in the week ending December 23, 2021, with 2.115 million; the largest week was the week ending December 22, 2022, with 2.232 million.
Vinyl sales were boosted during the week ended December 21, 2023, thanks to holiday shopping and promotional pricing and promotions from retailers.
The best-selling vinyl records for the week ending December 21 (reflected in advertising billboardvinyl album chart for December 30) is Taylor Swift’s 1989 (Taylor version) 57,000 copies sold. Swift dominates the week’s top four selling vinyl albums and six of the top seven. midnight, lover and Speak now (Taylor version) is No. 2-4, and folklore and Fearless (Taylor Version) It’s No. 6 and No. 7.
For the week ending December 21, 2023, vinyl sales of all Swift albums totaled 194,000 units, accounting for 9.5% of all U.S. artist vinyl sales for that week.
There is one week left in Luminate’s 2023 tracking year – the week of December 22-28. Since the week includes three shopping days before the Christmas holiday on December 23, there could be some sizable vinyl sales before the end of the year.
