If you were a teenager in 2003, chances are you were very familiar with the pop-punk/emo band yellow card‘s seminal hit”ocean avenue”. “Ocean Avenue” is an iconic anthem about teenage love and revelry that still resonates today.
To perfectly coincide with the 20th anniversary of the song (and Yellowcard’s major-label debut album of the same name), Yellowcard teamed up Steve Aoki A stunning remix that brings pop punk classics into the modern era and onto the dance floor.
It was actually Yellowcard singer and guitarist Ryan Key who approached Aoki about a possible collaboration. Key and the band have been dabbling in electronic music since returning from a six-year hiatus, and Aoki’s punk rock bona fide is well known. There are many dance music covers of songs from the early 2000s, but the music gets even sweeter when the original artists actively contribute to the new tracks. This is the case with the new version of Ocean Drive.
“When Ryan was first approached about this possible collaboration, I was really excited – especially when I discovered how much he loves electronic music.” Aoki said. “We combined different musical styles to create the perfect fusion of alternative rock and electronic for this song. Commemorating Ocean Drive’s 20th anniversary by merging these sounds has been an amazing experience.”
“I really admire the collaborations Steve has done in the alternative rock and emo worlds, and now is the perfect time for us to reach out and see if we can collaborate on the 20th anniversary of Ocean Drive.” Key added . “Steve’s passion for music and creativity is contagious. The band and I are huge fans of electronic music, so working with him is an absolute career highlight.”
