What is your earliest hip-hop memory?
This may sound corny, but I can’t cap it, Eminem sure. I remember when I was about 10 years old, I was driving to Oven River with my family and the radio reception was intermittent as my brothers and I tried to learn My Name Is, Memory Is Great.
What sets you apart from other hip-hop artists in the music industry today?
I’m not worried and I don’t want to prove anything. I do it out of pure love for the process and the feeling, which I think is rare these days. I also feel like “vocally” my voice is sonically unlike anyone else’s, and I’m proud of my diversity in tone and rhythm.
When did you realize rap was for you?
Everything I did as a kid, I had to work really, really hard to be good at. Like in school, I was considered smart, but I had to work really hard to be average. Even skateboarding, anyone who knows me would say “Charlie the Brothers Skate,” is hard to be good at. Rap and the whole musical aspect of life was the first thing that came “naturally” – I knew it was mine and I would hold on to it forever.
Charlie Threads, where did your nickname come from?
Hahaha I once freestyled at a friend’s house and he had a dog named Charlie, it was back in the weird future days where, you know, everyone was a name and a thing…etc.” Earl Sweatshirt” and “Frank Ocean,” so I was like fuck, “Charlie Thread” worked, but never knew I’d be here now.
Has this coronavirus interfered with promoting your music?
Of course, it disrupted everyone’s push and release schedules, and everything from shows to conferences suffered. The bad thing is, gigs are where I feel most comfortable, so a whole year without gigs was tough, but I stayed positive and focused on the fact that I had done a great job signing my first A contract and personal growth in 2020.
What do you hope new listeners take away from your new Say Less EP?
have fun! Make music for fun! That’s what we do, show up. I write quite a bit of introspective music and live ballads, which is music that comes from pure enjoyment.
Can we expect any new music in the rest of 2020?
No new music, but probably one of the most mature videos in the country!
Where do you see yourself in 5 years?
Wine Tasting with Drake
Any advice for new independent teen artists considering becoming a rapper?
As for you, don’t be afraid of failure and let it fuel you. Never be constrained by it, you have to use it to your advantage.
