What is your earliest hip-hop memory?
When I was a kid, I bought Marshall Mathers, LP, and when my dad heard what I was listening to, he literally took the CD out of the CD player and crushed it with his bare hands. The following week I bought it and the Slim Shady LP.
What sets you apart from other hip-hop artists in the music industry today?
I think what sets me apart the most is my acoustic guitar. There aren’t a lot of hip hop artists that are as proficient on guitar as I am and I incorporate a lot of guitar elements into my music.
When did you realize rap was for you?
When I recorded my first demo in 2013, I sang and rapped because I loved both. When I played for friends, they told me my demo was terrible but the rap part was cool. That’s when I realized I had a talent for rapping, so I wanted to develop it.
Where did your nickname come from, Frisky the Rapper?
The name Frisky came from a friend of mine whom we used to call Frisky Troublz. This is what he looks like when he’s drunk. Every time he got drunk he would do some crazy unpredictable things, but he was funny so we called him “Frisky Troublz”. I like to think my music is fun and full of surprises, like my drunken friends, so I named myself “Frisky the Rapper.”
Has Corona Visus interfered with promoting your music?
Coronavirus actually helped me because my latest album was very difficult and expensive to produce, but with studios and musicians out of work I was able to get good deals to get it done. Plus, I have more free time.
What do you hope new listeners take away from your new WRITING ON THE WALL album?
In life, we are always looking for and interpreting clues or signs in the universe to determine how we will live our lives. Sometimes these signs are helpful, but sometimes they can take you off the right path if you insist on them. I wrote “The Omen” to remind others that you have to trust your instincts when it comes to interpreting the clues, and sometimes you have to ignore the signs and ignore the “evil signs” in order to live the life you want, because no matter what No matter what stage of life you are in, there will always be people and signs telling you that you shouldn’t do something.
Can we expect any new music in early 2021?
I’m definitely working on something, but I’m not sure what it is yet. Writing on the Wall is my third album. So I learned that after finishing a huge project, I go through this weird grief phase where I think what I did wasn’t good enough, so I have to look beyond myself. So I created a lot of ideas, but I didn’t develop them until the second year.
Where do you see yourself in 5 years?
Make music and hopefully perform for real fans.
Any advice for new independent teen artists considering becoming a rapper?
Develop your style and master your process through trial and error. Everyone has their own style and way of making music, so you need to figure out yours so you can master it. And never stop learning. There is a lot to learn about music production and this industry.
