ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) — Looking to venture out into Rochester’s incredible music community in 2024?
We’ve put together a list of some must-see original music performances from our music series “Songs from Studio B.”
Picking 5 of the 50 performers we feature in this series is nearly impossible, but we’ve got a balance between “big names” and “hidden gems” as well as a variety of genres.
Public water supply (illegal country)
If you love country, outlaw country, and classic rock, you’ll love the public water supply.
In 2022, it emerged on the Rochester music scene with its patented blend of raucous country music and occasionally playful lyrics.
Up front is Iggy Marino, an electronic artist and talented singer who is becoming a rising star. The orchestra fully supports him, with a group of college-trained musicians who don’t skimp on talent for the sake of fun.
They also frequently perform with singers Adrianna Noone and Tanner Kartes.
Judas (classic rock)
If you like Steely Dan, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Tom Petty and classic rock, then you’ll love JUDAH.
JUDAH was founded at ROC Star Academy, coached by Rochester rock music legend Elvio Fernandes. A spokesman for the academy said “Judas” was a real success story for the programme.
This group of young musicians—who were all teenagers when they wrote the songs—are a miracle. With rock originals, they wow with an incredibly sophisticated and high-energy set.
The group’s leader, Anthony Blood, is another rising star in the Rochester area. These cats have a good grasp of the local music.
Cammy Enaharo (singer-songwriter)
If you like Tracy Chapman, Joey Oladokun, and Regina Spector, you’ll also like Kami Nnaharo.
Kami has repeatedly earned a reputation as one of the most popular singer-songwriters in the area. Cami used her baritone ukulele to sing personal songs with impeccable sincerity.
She has had many different backing bands over the years, but she often plays solo, or as on this song, with Jared Tinkham playing acoustic guitar.
Cool Club and Lipker Sisters (jazz, boogie-woogie)
If you like Marcia Ball, the Andrews Sisters, the Great American Songbook and swing, then you’ll love Cool Club and the Lipker Sisters.
Led by Marilla Gonzalez, Grace and Lizzie Lipker, the group captivated audiences throughout the greater Rochester area with their extraordinary harmonies and swinging blues tunes. They have become one of the most popular local acts in the area.
They showcased a variety of original compositions by Cool Club guitarist Rick Hoyt as well as other band members and standards.
If you weren’t a jazz lover before CCLS, you will be after CCLS.
Raedwald Howland-Bolton (blues, ragtime, American music)
“My dad could have given me a shorter name, but he didn’t.”
If you like blues, ragtime and other American music, you’ll love Raed. He has a signature fingerstyle Piedmont blues style, and a signature smoky howl.
Raed is a hidden gem but is making its way to the forefront of our community, from busking to regular gigs at the Lovin Cup and gigs at The Spirit Room with the State Street Stompers.
