Marco Island Art Center kicks off January with “Another Canvas: Tattoo as Art,” a “unique exploration of the fusion of traditional art and the vibrant world of tattooing.”
The exhibition, which runs from January 8 to February 27, “provides an in-depth look at the art of tattooing and the skilled artists who bring it to life.”
“Just Another Canvas” is a featured exhibit at Collier County’s Arte Viva, a countywide celebration of Hispanic arts and culture.
The exhibition showcases the work of three artists who are trained in painting and licensed as tattoo artists, boldly proclaiming “Art is Art!”
South Florida-based Pollyanna Fernandez, Jose Luis Bermudez and “Mully” Mulhern display their unique styles on painter’s canvas and human skin.
Professional photographers Jim Robellard and Art David “masterfully capture” the essence of these tattoos, providing a visually stunning exploration of this art form. Through photographs and accompanying narratives, visitors will gain insight into the motivations behind tattoos and why they have become a mainstream form of artistic expression in the United States.
The exhibition will host two receptions on the second Tuesday of each month, January 9 and February 13 at 5:30 p.m. Attendees will have the opportunity to purchase paintings, lithographs and photographs, including permanent and temporary tattoo images.
“Our goal is to promote understanding and appreciation of this increasingly popular form of personal artistic expression,” said Barbara Parisi, chair of the Marco Island Art Center Gallery Committee. “Pollyanna Fernandez Pollyanna Fernandez, Jose Luis Bermudez and ‘Mully’ Mulhern’s diverse works, as well as Jim Robellard and Art David’s Captivating photography that creates a powerful narrative about the art of tattooing.”

The Arts Center’s Creative Manager Myriam Kriel will be showcasing her work throughout January. Kriel is a versatile artist skilled in Photoshop art and clay, and her exhibition, titled “Synergy,” combines digital media works with her ceramic works, presenting a contemporary fusion of digital and traditional art.

By popular demand, L-Yen’s “Cuban Music” returns to the Musical Intermezzo series in January.
L-Yen will perform on January 18 at 5:30 p.m.
“This musical carnival has the audience dancing throughout the gallery to the rhythmic style of a captivating mix of traditional and contemporary music.”
