Giannina Antonette Oteto may be an unfamiliar name to you, but you’ve definitely seen her before. Additionally, she graced the cover art of Childish Gambino (aka Donald Glover). “Wake up, my love!” 2016 album cover. Creative director Ibra Ake photographed Oteto wearing a beaded headpiece designed by WXYZ jewelry designer Laura Wass. However, for years Otetto has accused the multidisciplinary artist and his team of avoiding legal contact in order to actually receive payment for her contributions to the project, and she’s not alone in this fight. She recently updated followers on Facebook and commented on her bittersweet emotions about the work.
“Being able to hold an album that I’m on the cover of,” Giannina Oteto said in a photo of herself holding a vinyl copy of Childish Gambino’s album (which appears to have been said under the heading “Delete”. “And I have the best mom celebrating next to me! My first cheerleader! This album was hard for me to celebrate for many reasons, and I even felt resentful about it over the years. It made me It’s been a lot, but to finally be able to celebrate it means a lot! Update: I’m upset about this because myself, the makeup artist, and the stylist (all black women) were (used) and lied to.

“Our wages were low. (They) promised a surplus. But (we) received nothing,” she continued. “The only person who received the remnants was a white woman who made the headpiece even though she wasn’t ready to be a part of it (and deserved it). After years of lies and silence, then discovery statute of limitations complications… it’s an exhausting, emotional, overall sad thing. So it takes a lot out of me, especially since we all work with so much love , and proud to represent Black artists. All communications from my attorneys have been ignored by (Childish Gambino) and his team. #bittersweet.”
In addition, the model forwarded the various drawings she received “Wake up, my love!”of release. So she’s clearly grateful for her contributions and opportunities, but also rightfully believes that she and many others deserve more.
