Pennjamin Bannekar Interview: Bringing Honesty and Passion to Music
Art is a personal endeavor and it’s always refreshing to hear honest, real life experiences waxed. Pennjamin Bannekar does an excellent job of creating a musical landscape that reflects his daily life and has managed to share his work with a wide variety of people, even opening for Elzhi at Slum Village and alongside KRS-ONE, Dwele and Bilal concert tour. We had the chance to ask him about his music and his latest EP 1/11, what to watch out for in 2018, and some of his favorite moments from his career. Learn more about this Chicago artist below and find out why he’s able to bring his passion to life.
Q: You kicked off the new year with EP 1/11. What was it like making this project? What’s your favorite song on the tape?
The final form is 1/11 is the third and final version of the EP.The first two versions of the project were called Smiling all over and apparently transparent. Smiling all over There are a lot of uplifting songs, and there are a lot of songs on Obvious Transparent that deal with deeper issues that I’ve been through, and I put them out there. 1/11 It’s more of a celebration and I’m posting it on my actual birthday, celebration is the best way to do it lol.

Q: When did you start getting into music? What does it feel like to progress as an artist?
When I was younger I wanted to be the next Michael Jackson until I realized I couldn’t sing or dance so that dream was quickly dashed but during the Bad Boy movement I started dabbling in writing and recording my own raps . musical instruments. Then the summer after eighth grade, I started recording music in my grandma’s basement with my brother and his two best friends. Since then, I feel like I’ve made exponential progress in my lyrics, delivery, flow, song production, and songwriting abilities, but that progress has been one of the most rewarding and frustrating experiences of my life. I say this because there is no better feeling than when you see a song or your plan come to fruition exactly how you envisioned it. On the other hand, you may often question what you are doing when things go against your plans.

I have more visual effects to shoot 1/11 EP…(song arcade and best life There will definitely be a music video) I will perform the song on stage 1/11. I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t eager to see how the songs from this project perform on stage. I have more work to do for other artists and hope to do a joint EP with Dhniera Blu, we’ve been talking about it for a few years. Also, as we speak, I’m working on my next solo project with Fr3shmen (which I’m super excited about because I always feel like when we put musical ideas together, we’re unstoppable) and if All going well, I hope to release it in Q4.

Q: How does it feel to tour with legends like Elzhi, KRS-ONE, Dwele and Bilal Oliver?
I think the biggest takeaway I get from every artist is that music can be your job and provide you with food. Each of these artists has toured across the country multiple times, and each time they showcase their artwork to fans and supporters. For me, this is my biggest dream in music. It was never about money or fame. I have always been committed to creating and sharing my art. Obviously, I always knew it was possible, but being able to experience it firsthand and see these artists realize their dreams was priceless for me.
Q: What’s your favorite song you’ve ever recorded? Why?
Someone asked me this question the other day and I couldn’t answer them lol…Of course I do have songs that I like more than others and when I look back at everything I’ve recorded those songs are held in high regard but I can’t say which ones One is more loved than the other. I say that because every song I admire has a different reason. People might have a great story behind actually recording the song, and when I write another song I might feel like I’m on a roll… haha, I can’t pick just one.

Without a doubt, my favorite show was the show I opened for Elzhi in Chicago. I really love Ghetto Village so having the opportunity to be on the same bill as him was an honor in itself, but the crowd that night was awesome. When I walked off the stage I felt like Jay-Z or Kanye because the crowd rocked with me that night. It was like I could do no wrong and they loved every minute of my show! Then, when I was coming off stage, I bumped into Michelle Williams (Destiny’s Child). (She’s gorgeous in person, by the way).

Q: If you had to describe your music in three words, what would you say and why?
focus (Because I know what my style is, I know what I’m good at musically). factual (All my music comes from real life experiences I’ve been through and I refuse to talk about things I haven’t experienced. You will never hear me say I live in a mansion unless I actually live in a mansion. A mansion Ha ha). Modesty and arrogance (I don’t feel like I’m bragging in front of you, but I’ve never been shy about showing anyone who listens why I’m the best and only Penjamin Banaka.)

Q: If you could collaborate with one artist in the world, who would you choose?
I can’t pick just one, but it would be Michael Jackson, Andre 3000, Kanye West (from the college dropout days) and The Dream. In addition, there are many artists that may not be known to the public, such as Omen and Tia London, who I would love to collaborate with.
