in a recent interview Hip Hop DX, Black Thought announced a list of his five favorite MCs. In addition to the artist list, the Roots performer also shared a theory that each person represents one of his “primary colors.” According to him, his list of favorite artists “always revolves around (his) foundation,” so there’s a lot of meaning behind it.

First on his list is Kool G Rap, whom he praises for his “rich vocabulary and his ability to incorporate his vast knowledge into storytelling.” According to Black Thought, his work is “timeless” and he can listen to it on repeat “forever”. Next up is “Daddy Kane,” who said he chose Kane for “some of the same reasons.” He claimed that the artist had “far more style than technique, or as much style as technique,” and called him a “sleek operator.”

That gave him Rakim, the third pick. “Kane and G Rap, and Rakim, brought a different beat that we hadn’t heard before – a Shakespearean ‘to be or not to be’ style… They were all incorporating Shakespearean stuff, but in a different way,” he added. : “In different ways.” Continuing his list, Black Thought also named Public Enemy’s Chuck D, whom he praised for his activism and “brave” style choices. The last was LL Cool J, who he toured with during the year. “He had such an impact on me as a young man because I saw myself in him; we were so close in age,” he described.

“LL is the Royals’ lead rocker, but he’s only 16 and he moves like a seasoned veteran,” he also noted. “Even touring with him this summer, that’s true. That’s who he is. He’s a top-notch actor.” What do you think of Black Thought’s top five most popular MCs? Who are your top five?Share your thoughts in the comments section below and follow HNH Learn more updates.
