Texas State music alums include George Strait, Randy Rogers

Austin has long been considered a hotbed of Texas music. However, Central Texas has produced some great artists, including a handful just a few miles south of Interstate 35.

From U.S. presidents to award-winning actors, Texas State University has its fair share of famous alumni. In fact, before some musicians had record-breaking hits, they were gracing the halls of the San Marcos campus.

Here are six musicians who attended Texas State University.

The folk duo have been friends since their youth. According to the Deseret News, Jonathan Clay and Zach Chance were both roommates at Texas State University. The duo wrote the songs “Revival” and “California.”

According to reports, Maggie Heath, one of the folk duo The Oh Hellos, attended Texas State University. Heath co-wrote the song “Oh Hello, Wanna Come Have a Drink with Me” with her brother Tyler for a 2011 album for their mom. Since then, the duo has recorded eight albums, which have been listened to approximately 3 million times on Spotify.

Randy Rogers received a degree in mass communications from Texas State University in 2001. Rogers and his band would perform at venues around San Marcos while in college. As the band grew in popularity, they began touring out of town, KTSW reported. The band has recorded seven studio albums and had seven singles on the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart.

According to KTSW, country artist Sunny Sweeney graduated from Texas State University in 2001 with a degree in public relations.The artist has her first album Heartbreakers Hall of Fame He was released five years after graduation.
