Music has changed a lot since Soulja Boy released her first hit single, “Crank That.” The song continues to define the ringtone rap era and has achieved unprecedented success via the Internet. But the way music takes off online is very different now than it used to be. This shift is largely due to TikTok. Soulja herself realizes how different things would be if her hit breakthrough song were released today.
In a new interview, he confidently claimed that if the song were released today, it would be even more popular than it was back then. It’s hard to imagine the song being more popular, as it spent seven weeks on the Hot 100 chart. It also spawned one of the biggest dance trends of the 2000s and is still etched in the minds of many fans today. With hit songs from TikTok more common than ever, it’s easy to see why he thought this song might be even more popular. Check out the clip from the interview he mentioned below.

TikTok will eat it up with dance moves,” one comment read. But not all responses were unanimous. Another top commenter wrote: “No he actually sold the physical CD, not to mention the song is still around and viral 15 years later and can’t beat it with a stick.”
