Roger Waters is an undisputed British music icon who rose to fame as a founding member of the pioneering progressive rock band Pink Floyd. Formed in 1965, Pink Floyd became one of the biggest rock bands in the world, with a career that spanned decades. Their unique and ever-changing sound made the group a worldwide rock phenomenon, but Waters cites one piece of classical music as an essential part of his life.
Waters started out as the bassist for Pink Floyd and moved to the forefront after Syd Barrett left in 1968. His tenure as Floyd’s primary songwriter saw the band’s most successful period.Creating brilliant, groundbreaking concept albums such as the iconic dark side of the moonWaters has proven himself time and time again to be one of the most amazing original songwriters on the scene.
During the band’s early years, under Barrett’s leadership, the band became leaders in the emerging psychedelic and acid rock scene. However, as the team progressed, Waters was able to adapt to each new project easily and effectively. Undoubtedly one of the best progressive rock bands of all time, Pink Floyd, with Waters at the helm, cemented themselves as leaders of British rock music.
As early as 2011, Waters was invited to participate in the long-running BBC Radio 4 exhibit desert island discs List of eight tracks he would take with him if he were cast adrift on a deserted island. He selected some seminal tracks by the likes of Chet Baker, Billie Holiday and Neil Young.
The list of songwriters clearly shows no influence from progressive rock contemporaries, or indeed rock contemporaries, leaning more towards folk and jazz. This is perhaps not surprising. Waters has always had a wide range of influences. Even more surprising is that he chose his favorite piece as the fourth movement of Gustav Mahler’s Symphony No. 5 in C sharp minor.
Mahler was a famous Romantic composer from Bohemia who later moved to Vienna, where he composed most of his favorite works. Although he was a well-respected composer during his lifetime, he found new success after the rediscovery of his works after World War II, during which time his music became less popular due to his Jewish ancestry. Nazi Germany was banned.
Waters spoke on the show about his appreciation of Mahler’s work, especially his Symphony No. 5. While you might not automatically associate Pink Floyd with bohemian classical music, the frontman’s work outside of the band has repeatedly touched on classical roots.his 2005 operatic production will do Perhaps the best example, but it has been associated with many of his projects over the years.
