Normally when we reach the end of another year in the upstate music scene, I use this space to let you know who I think did something great this year, whether it be an impressive album, a special concert, or something else Some effort.

To be sure, there are indeed many such stories to tell this year. Darby Wilcox and her band The Peep Show has released what may be her strongest collection of music to date, a new EP titled “It’s OK”.this Greenville Country Music Festival Bringing superstars like Kid Rock and Travis Tritt to Simpsonville, as well as a host of up-and-coming young country singers.and meeting on wheelsThe Jazz Concert Series, which offers some of the region’s best musical performances, celebrates its 100th performance.

But our music scene in Greenville has also taken a bit of a hit this year. Gottrocks, one of the area’s longest-running nightclubs, has closed.Like Greer’s delightful eclecticism spinning Jennyand Smiley’s Acoustic Cafealthough it later reopened in another location.

Rising Liquor Liability Insurance Rates These issues have become such a prominent issue for small music venues that a grassroots movement has sprung up across the north to raise awareness of the issue and work with state governments to find solutions.

But despite these losses and difficulties, I remain optimistic about the music industry heading into 2024.New venues are coming, most notably downtown true line and a new broadcast studio location on Liberty Avenue, not to mention the Peace Center Ambitious expansion plans Open several new concert venues.

But perhaps the best sign of the strength of our music scene comes from the concerts at The Foundry at the end of 2023.Numerous local musicians including superstars Marcus King and Edwin McCain Members of local aces such as Darby Wilcox and Shannon Hoover host their own Greenville Jazz Collective guitarist Matt Dingledine A charity event, every penny from ticket sales will go towards paying for Dingledin’s medical expenses as he battles cancer.

It’s a powerful reminder that the Northern music scene is always improving. What better sign that the music community is thriving?

See you in 2024.
